The coastal road, Route 160, also known as Ruta del Sol, offers a scenic and off-the-beaten-path journey to Nosara. This route is ideal for those staying in Tamarindo, Conchal, Playa Hermosa, El Coco, and any northern town in Guanacaste, when planning a visit to Nosara or the world famous Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, you will discover beautiful beaches like Playa Venado, Playa Lagarto, Marbella, Playa Pitahaya, and Playa San Juanillo, a small fishing village with one of the most incredible settings.

Road Conditions and Accessibility

Currently, when driving from Tamarindo and Flamingo, about 75% of Route 160 is paved until near Ostional. The unpaved section is generally in good condition, accessible for any vehicle, making it a viable option for most travelers. However, there are a couple of low spots to be aware of, especially during the rainy season (June to early November).

River Crossings: No longer needed!

During late 2025, the bridges over Ostional River and Quebrada del Rayo (Vuelta del Rayo), just before Ostional beach, were built and no longer vehicles need to take risk crossing the rivers.

Practical Advices

Check Road Conditions: If you know someone living near Ostional or Nosara, or if you are staying in a hotel in Nosara, ask them about the road conditions. During the rainy season, sometimes the road becomes a little challenging with some muddy spots.

Travel Timing: Plan your travel to be in San Juanillo during low or medium tide, it is worth to exlore this small beach.
