What to do in Nosara?

Are you visiting Playa Guiones and looking for fun activities in the Nosara area?

Trip Advisor ranks Nosara as one of the top 10 beaches in Central America. Not only because of its beauty, but also for the multitude of adventures you can enjoy with your friends and family while visiting this beautiful part of Guanacaste in Costa Rica.

Playa Guiones, the main beach in Nosara town, has something for everyone. Whether you like relaxed nature activities or are looking for hi-adrenaline adventures, you will find it all here.

The coastline of Playa Guiones is part of the Ostional-Nosara-Guiones National Wildlife Refuge, created to protect the nesting of different species of sea turtles, as well as birds, monkeys and other animals that made this critical habitat their home.  The beach path that takes you from Olas Verdes Hotel to Guiones beach winds through the refuge. This peaceful, naturally preserved area provides a real chance to connect with nature and is ideal for a beach hike or early morning jog.

If you enjoy hiking and nature, you will love the Lagarta Private Reserve, in Boca Nosara. This 35 – hectare reserve is home to monkeys, coatis, armadillos, deer, small wild cats, crocodiles and about 270 species of birds. The entrance to the reserve is located at the Lagarta Lodge.

The Nosara Refuge for Wildlife has been rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing howler monkeys since 1998.  Run by volunteers, it is well worth a visit to learn about these fascinating mammals. Every visit supports the operation of this outstanding program in Guanacaste. Advanced reservations are suggested. You can learn more about The Nosara Refuge for Wildlife at http://refugeforwildlife.com.

Once a month, one of the most important events in Nosara takes place at Ostional Beach: Turtle nesting, also called “arribada.” You can observe hundreds of turtles laying their eggs in the black volcanic sands of Ostional, near Nosara. Although turtles nest year-round, the larger arribadas are during the raining season, in August, September, and October. As magical as the arribadas are, the “reventaderos,” which is the little turtles hatching and finding their way into the ocean, is even more wonderous. You will never forget this experience. Playa Guiones is home to probably the most consistent and friendly wave in Guanacaste and Costa Rica, which make it an ideal location for taking surf lessonsSafari Surf School, with its ISA Certified Surf Instructors, was the first and still is one of the best and most professional surf schools in Nosara. The surf school is located at Olas Verdes Hotel and has direct access to the beach.

Nosara, with its variety of settings and disciplines, is the quintessential location for practicing Yoga. You can attend a retreat or join the daily lessons from experienced yoga instructors at a hotel or studio.  The Nosara Yoga Institute (www.nosarayoga.com) is the most renowned yoga institution in the country.

Playa Guiones in Nosara is an excellent vacation choice if you want to get pampered at one of the local spas, get a massage in the comfort of your hotel suite, or grab a beach cruiser bicycle to explore the town and visit the local shops. There are many different little restaurants, cafes and juice bars to enjoy, like the famous Go Juice (www.facebook.com/GoJuiceNosara/); or perhaps you prefer to drink the refreshing water from a fresh cut coconut once you leave the beach.  Additionally, there is an abundance of tours in Nosara, such as zip lining over the mountains, horseback riding trips, tennis on the new clay courts, an ATV tour to the waterfalls or the organic coffee farm in Zaragoza. For those who prefer to stay near the water, there is Stand Up Paddling along the Nosara River or the beach, snorkeling in Playa Rosada or San Juanillo beach, or chartering a boat for some exciting sport fishing. You can even let the kids revel in some “me-time” with the Nosara Day Camp activities and excursions (http://nosaradaycamp.com/). No matter what you choose during the day, you don’t want to miss the incredible and inspiring sunsets while laying on the soft sand of Playa Guiones.
